2/ „Demotivated because of how long it’ll take? Remember the time will pass anyways.“

100 Simple Truths

Someone else’s success isn’t your failure. A question opens the mind, a statement keeps it closed. Spending time on things you can’t control takes time away from things you can.

The Ease of Excellence

I spent yesterday swimming in Lake Travis, just outside of Austin. After floating around in the water for most of the day, we said YOLO and went cliff jumping. To make it happen, we anchored our boat ~100 yards away from the shore where the water was deep enough to avoid the bottom but shallow enough to drop the anchor. But because of that, everybody who wanted to jump had relatively long ways to swim.

Watching the swimmers, I noticed a direct correlation between speed and effortlessness. The fastest swimmers moved their bodies less than the slowest ones. And guess what? They looked calmer too. I mentioned this to a friend who is training for a triathlon, and he said: „Yep, when you start taking swim lessons, you focus on reducing excess motion.“

The ease of excellence shows up all over sports. I see it with Stephen Curry on the basketball court and Rory McIlroy on the golf course. In cooking, I see this in the mise-en-place principle of keeping everything in the right place, so they can cook without wasting time or effort. In writing, I see it with the way experienced writers reduce their work hours while continually improving their output.

Excess effort is inevitable when you pick up a new skill. But competence improves once you learn to get more out of each movement and prune the wasted ones, which is why excellence can look so easy.

Here is a 6 minute read of Japanese philosophies that’ll help you spend money consciously.

Currently practicing Chisoku — being content with what I already have. All of them are perspective-shifting. — CD

В тази връзка е и този quote: “It is the preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else, that prevents us from living freely and nobly.”,  Bertrand Russell
